This mushroom resembles a lion’s mane and are usually found in countries like Korea, Japan, India, and China. Their taste is like eating seafood. They can be consumed raw, dried or cooked.
Lion’s Mane mushrooms are rich in vitamins such as thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. They are also a good source of essential minerals such as manganese, zinc, and potassium. The benefits of Lion’s Mane include being an anti-inflammatory with conditions like heart disease, arthritis, and cancer, helping to stabilize molecules in our bodies called free radicals. They may aid in prevention or treatment of cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have been promising where Lion’s Mane aids in mental performance speed because it is a good source of the two chemicals that accelerate the growth of brain cells called hericenones and erinacines. These two brain chemicals have an antidepressant effect. Lion’s Mane reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.
In addition, the mushrooms contain chemicals that promote the growth, survival, and function of both new and mature nerve cells in the brain and elsewhere. These compounds go from the bloodstream into the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier. Lion’s Mane has been used to help treat stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and nerve injuries. The mushrooms have been shown to lower blood sugar and raise insulin levels. Studies also suggest them to be beneficial in easing diabetic neuropathy. Lastly, Lion’s Mane mushrooms are used to ease stomach issues and thicken the mucus lining of the stomach helping with ulcers. Mushrooms help to slow the growth of H.pylori, otherwise known as Helicobacter pylori, a type of bacteria linked with many stomach ulcers.
